Buddhism has two principal groups, Mahayana (Great Vehicle) and Hinayana (Small Vehicle).

Mahayana, the Buddhist school formed in the first century AD, asserts the existence of a series of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and that salvation may be gained by invocations to them.

Mahayanists hold that Buddhism should show mercy on all creatures and ferry them across the so-called life-and-death bridge to get to the other bank, where they are able to be conscious of the truth of Buddhism and become Bodhisattvas. Mahayana was popular in China and Korea.
