Ananda is Sakyamuni’s cousin and one of his chief disciples. As the master of hearing and memory, he kept following Sakyamuni closely for 25 years. He is said to have compiled the sutras and reckoned to be the second patriarch. Dressed as a monk, he often appears together with Mahakasyapa in support of Sakyamuni.
