At 10 p. m. on August 23rd, 1987, the Palace of the Southward was struck by lightning and caught fire. Part of the building collapsed. Renovation work started in early 1989 and was finished, including repainting in 1990* In the Forbidden City, 69 tall buildings have been installed with lightning conductors. The Jingyang Palace was not a tall building which was why no lightning conductor was fixed to it. At present, some experts suggest that all the buildings in the Forbidden City, no matter how tall, should be installed with lightning conductors. Other specialists argue that if all the stalled with lightning rods they will definitely form afield which may cause more lightning strikes.
