Now we come to the Hall of Mental Cultivation, which was built in the Ming Dynasty. It served as the living quarters for emperors over many centuries and gained added importance during the reign of Qing Emperor Yongzheng (1723-1735) when it became the office where the Emperor conducted important affairs of state. It is believed that most of the Qing emperors lived and worked in this hall.
