Beijing Geography

Beijing is situated at 40 degrees north latitude and 116 degrees east longitude. It lies about the same latitude as Rome in Italy, Madrid in Spain and Philadelphia in the US.
The city of Beijing occupies a total area of over 16, 800 square kilometers (6,184 square miles). The mountain area covers 62 percent of the total areas while percent is flat land. It is 176 kilometers (109 miles) long from north to south and 160 kilometers (99 miles) wide from east to west. It is surrounded by mountains to the east, west and north。
Geographically speaking, the northwestern part is high while the southeast is low. The average elevation of Beijing is 43. 71 meters (143. 4 feet) above sea level. The highest mountain point in Beijing is Lingshan (Mount Spirit) in the district of Mentogou about 2, 303 meters (7, 556 feet) above sea level, while the lowest plain is in Chaichangtun, Tongzhou District, only about 8 meters (26.3 feet) above sea level. The second highest mountain is Haitou Mountain, 2, 241 meters (7, 352 feet) above sea level, located in Yan Qing County, and the third highest mountain is Baihua Mountain, located in Mentogou district, 2, 218 meters ( 7, 277 feet) above sea level.
Beijing consists of 18 districts and counties, 16 of which are districts while 2 of them are counties. Beijing stands 183 kilometers (114 miles) northwest of the Gulf of Bohai, the seacoast.
