Subway Line 13, also known as the City Rail Line, has been under operation since 2002, and actually is the third subway line in Beijing. This line traverses through the northern suburbs of Beijing, and forming the shape of an inverted U. Most sections of this line are above the ground; therefore, it is regarded as a light rail.

Subway line 13 is 40.85 km long with 16 stations. It is a semicircular line runs the north of Beijing from Xizhimen to Dongzhimen (both are also stations on the loop Line 2). The 40.8 km line runs above ground. After the western section (20.6km) went into operation on 28 Sept. 2002, the eastern section wwas opened in January 2003.
