Deshengmen(Gate of Virtuous Triumph), used to be one of the nine city gates of old Beijing. It was erected in 1439. The arrow castle of this gate is similar to that of the Front Gate. The gate was torn down when the subway was built, but the Arrow Castle remained and was renovated in 1981. From 1949 to 1984, more than 7 million yuan was spent on renovating the ancient buildings in Beijing.

“Desheng” means triumphant return of generals who made brilliant achievements in battlefields. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, troops returned to the city through the Gate of Virtuous Triumph.
