Picture 1 of 1

Now we come to Central and South Seas or Zhongnanhai in Chinese. It is located on the west of the Forbidden City. The area used to be called “three seas”, Western Lake or Pool of Great Secretion. It covers an area of 100 hectares (250 acres), of which the Seas occupy 47 hectares (117 acres). It was first built in Liao (907 to1125) and rebuilt in Jin (1115.to 1234), Yuan (1279 to 1368), Ming (1368 to 1644), and Qing (1644 to 1911) dynasties. The area used to be the travelling palace and a place for tour and banquets for the feudal emperors. After the demise of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, it served as the headquarters of the government of Yuan Shikai.

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it has been the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. It is now not only the supreme leading centre for the whole nation, but also one of the important places for both the Chinese people and international friendly intercourse.

Late Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou used to live in it.
