Cultural Palace for Nationalities

This is Cultural Palace for Nationalities designed in traditional Chinese style. It is one of the ten architectural landmarks, including the Great Hall of the People, Beijing Railway Station, Museums of Chinese History and the Chinese Revolution, the Military Museum and others erected in 1959 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The building consists of a central tower and two three-storey wings. The tower, 67 metres high with 13 storeys, was in its time one of Beijing’s tallest structures.

The central tower houses 18 exhibition halls and a library. The two wings are devoted to entertainment and recreation, housing an auditorium, a club and a dance-dinner hall.

With the development of China’s tourism and the increased relations with foreign countries, 20 well-furnished suites on the third floor have been opened for residence by tourists. They can hold banquets, cocktail parties and tea parties in the dance-dinner hall. Tourists can come to dance from 9 p. m. to 2 a. m. on ‘Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The club is open from 9 p. m. to 2 a. m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

After China’s Olympic athletes took 15 gold medals in the Los Angeles Games in 1984, the nation’s sports enthusiasts were eager to try many other events, including bowling, which is likely to become an Olympic event in the future.
Because bowling requires a large indoor space, it has been regarded in China as a luxurious activity and only a few people have dabbled in it in the past.

Ryonosuke Hasebe, a Japanese businessman, in early 1985 donated bowling equipment to the Palace and helped install it within two weeks. On March 1, 1985 the palace officially opened a four-lane alley and held its first bowling match. The bowling lanes are open on Tues-day, Thursday and Saturday evenings
