Collegiate Gymnasium

Collegiate Gymnasium

Picture 1 of 1

With a seating capacity of 4,200, the gymnasium is a square with a tower on each of its four corners. The front concrete eaves of the gym’s main body are very thick and extend outward. This design stems from traditional Chinese archways. Built in Beijing Teachers’ College of Physical Education, about 2 kilometres east of the Friend-ship Hotel and at the northern side of the third ring road, the gymnasium belongs to the institute after the Asian Games. For flexibility of use, the designer made nearly two thirds of the seats removable. All16 rows of seats on its first and second floors can be slid away like drawers. When the first six rows of seats on the first floor are rolled back, the floor space can be used for handball games or be divided into three basketball courts for the institute’s use. When 10 rows of seats on the second floor are rolled back, the space can be made into six badminton courts.
