Picture 1 of 1

Elliptical in shape, Chaoyang Gymnasium is 96 metres long and 66 metres wide. It was built for the volleyball games in 1990 Asian Games. Covering an area of 3.5 acres, its steel-cable supported roof has two arching bridges suspended from two thick steel cables.

The building’s overall look is somewhat like a liner sailing under a suspension bridge.

The gymnasium can hold an audience of 3,200. And its inside ground level is 4.5 metres below ground level. Skylights here create daylight conditions. After the Asian Games, the gymnasium is used for basketball, badminton, ping-pong and seven person handball matches. Apart from these, the gymnasium can also host various kinds of performances.
