It is Beijing’s main boulevard running east-west through the heart of the city. It is 40 kilometres long and 50 metres wide on an average. Before 1949 it was only 3. 7 kilometres long, and it was extended and expanded in 1958. It is flanked on either side by modern buildings and courtyard homes left from pre-liberation days.
